As part of the Design + Ethnography + Futures programme of research we undertake projects which both address real world research and design problems and develop our methodology. Our projects are interdisciplinary and collaborative. Our work can involve colleagues from other disciplines such as engineering or architecture, or external research partners and stakeholders.
Design+Ethnography+Futures projects seek to explore the relationship between design, ethnography and futures through practice-based research that is undertaken in dialogue with theoretical scholarship.
The theme of uncertainty has been at the core of our programme of work for our first year in 2014. We see uncertainty as a generative element of ethnography and design, and have sought ways in which it can be found, acknowledged and harnessed for imagining and making the possible. In particular we have become interested in the question of how we can both understand and generate forms of productive and creative uncertainty – both within ethnographic and design practice and with our participants.
